Inside the older rings the lateral running out to the main is commonly vitrified clay, laid in short lengths with a joint every few feet, under one of the largest healthy American elm populations left anywhere. Those lines genuinely fail, and the roots arriving at every joint are why.
Out in the communities built since the 1980s the same house has plastic in long runs with almost nothing for a root to get into. A drain that stops there is a blockage, not a failure, and the honest answer is a cleaning and a bill you will barely notice. If that is your house, we will tell you so and you will have spent one inspection finding out.
That is not modesty. It is the whole mechanism: every time this company says "you do not need this", it buys the credibility it spends later on somebody whose line really is finished.
